Skin tags are harmless non-cancerous growths that protrude or hang off the skin. They are usually skin colored or slightly darker in color. They are known by various names including acrochordons, fibroepithelial polyps or papillomas, and soft fibromas. They are very common lesions and increase with age. They may occur anywhere on the skin but are most common in regions of skin folds like the groin, underarm, neck, and eyelids. They tend to occur more frequently in patients who are obese or who have type 2 diabetes.

Most skin tags do not cause any problems but they can become irritated by rubbing against clothing and may occasionally lose their blood supply and become necrotic. They may be easily treated by simple scissor removal, tying off their base (ligation), or by burning (electrocautery).
